Bafta preview: The Driver

David Morrissey takes the driving seat in new BBC Drama

Yesterday, I had the honour of previewing The Driver. a 3 part BBC commission at the BAFTA. David Morrissey who is best known for his work in the Walking Dead, takes the lead role as Vince, a mundane Mancunian taxi driver with a humdrum life and tense family environment. In the despair of his life and career, he meets up with old friend Colin (Ian Hart), who was recently released from prison. The crossing of their path results in criminal consequences for our dear old dad Vince who joins forces with a charismatic gang leader.

The climax of the thriller comes in the form of a high speed chase across Manchester, which is also the lead-in scene to the pilot. After this captivating chase however, there wasn't much going on. It did take about an hour to build up momentum but once Vince decides to join crime Lord The Horse, I was honestly at the edge of my seat. You are anticipating when Vince will get caught by the police or better yet his wife,

Among the smoke of his criminal endeavours, there is a shield of mystery around the disappearance of his son. Though this story arc was slightly underdeveloped, there was enough teasers to grasp my interest to enquire more.

Overall, the driver is a solid British drama, with a smart script written by Danny Brocklehurst. David Morrissey is definitely the star of the show - inviting you into the taxi to be part of the ride! Give this drama a chance when it airs in September on BBC1.
